Trump bans Transgenders from military service

The White House recently annouced that it plans to ban "most" transgender individuals from the military. The specfic new policy states: "transgender persons with a history or diagnosis of gender dysphoria -- individuals who the policies state may require substantial medical treatment, including medications and surgery -- are disqualified from military service except under certain limited circumstances." The exception to the rule applies for transgender individuals who have been "stable in their biological sex" for 36 consecutive months, transgender service members from president Obama's administration, and service members who do not require a "change of sex".

Clearly, this new policy is transphobic and a direct attack on the transgender community. From a legal perspective it prevents future service members from serving as openly trans, however this policy has been pushed back heavily by several LGBT advocacy groups which claim this policy is unconsitutional.

My questions for the caucus are as follows:

  • What are the ramifications of this policy?
  • What was Trump's intentions behind this policy?
  • How will this affect the LGBT community as a whole?
