Should We Lower the Drinking Age?

Although the legal drinking age in the US is 21 years old, studies and statistics have shown that the consumption of alcohol by people under the age of 21 years old is extremely common.  In fact, 2017 studies and surveys by multiple sources reported that more than 40% of underage people surveyed claimed to have consumed alcohol on numerous occasions.  Underage drinking could lead to issues in cognitive development, memory retention, and social problems.  Although only 40% of people surveyed admitted to consuming alcohol underage, we see way more than 40% of students underage in college drinking.  However, at the age of 18 we are granted rights such as participating in our country's government elections, apply for bank loans, and join the military. Do you think our country should lower the drinking age to 18 in order to give young adults more freedom to make decisions for themselves?
