Between Monday, November 18 and the deadline of Monday, December 2 at 11:59, use this group to discuss the relative merits of proposals in terms of potential inclusion in the MSC Platform. In particular, discuss:

  • Which specific proposals are most worthy of being in the platform, and why? (Reference the rating criteria list below.)
  • In general, which issues should be the priority for students in Michigan, and which proposals best address those issues?

Also:

  • Before posting, be sure to read any and all of the posts that have already been made by others. If others have posted about a proposal you'd like to discuss, join that discussion. If not, start a new thread.
  • Unless you have a compelling reason to do otherwise, discuss just one proposal in each posting, indicating the name of the proposal in the title of your comment.
  • Keep your comments focused on the IDEAS in the proposal, not the authors. Remember that everyone has worked hard on their proposal, and that every proposal has both strengths and weaknesses.

RATING CRITERIA

Please consider these criteria when rating proposals.

  • Is each part of the proposal completed in a high-quality way?

  • How relevant is the proposal to the needs of students of different ages and backgrounds in different parts of Michigan?
  • To what extent do the consultations add important information and non-obvious perspectives?
  • To what extent is there credible articulation of counter-arguments and challenges to potential adoption and implementation of the proposed solution?
  • To what extent does the proposed solution contain specificity and detail that shows how it could actually be implemented and paid for?
  • To what extent does the proposal demonstrate creativity and passion for the issue?

Benjamin's proposal on gun violence

Dylan Hopen's picture

Benjamin's proposal on gun violence should be featured on this platform and included more into the discussion. Gun violence is a prominent issue facing our country and it does not get enough attention. According to Giffords Law Center, 36,000 Americans are killed by guns each year—an average of 100 per day. 100,000 Americans are shot and injured each year. Worst yet, In 2017, gun deaths reached their highest level in at least 40 years, with 39,773 deaths that year alone.

High Amounts of PFAs and Dioxane in Michigan Water

Jeremy Block's picture

I think that the High Amounts of PFAs and Dioxane in Michigan Water proposal by Noah Greenbaum should be strongly considered for the panel. In terms of relevancy, after everything that happened in Flint, water quality in Michigan's lakes has been a primary topic in the news. Thus, any viable solutions to help in fixing the water quality should be heavily considered. Looking at Noah's proposal, I believe there is a quality solution that would benefit Michigan greatly.

3rd Graders Falling Behind

James Landau's picture

I believe Bailey and Juliette's proposal provides a unique initative. The issue at hand is more than evident, as just over 44% of Michigan third graders currently do not meet the necessary reading proficiency standards. What is important about this statistic, is the fact that Bill 4822, passed in 2016 and going into effect in 2020, requires that students who are not at the profiiency level, be held back.

“Why You Should Get Vaccinated” by Rebecca White.

Isabelle Mark's picture

I think the proposal titled “Why You Should Get Vaccinated” by Rebecca White is worthy of being in the platform for a number of reasons. Many people in Michigan, especially students, are unsure if they want a flu shot or not. Rebecca explains how this bill will make a difference by helping people not feel discriminated against for not receiving a vaccine. In this proposal, Rebecca displays how she has done her research on vaccines and how they are safe and effective for many people, even though many people think otherwise.

Hi Francisco, I really...

Cassie Alexe's picture

Hi Francisco, I really enjoyed reading your proposal and I think it makes sense that you narrowed down your topic to pertain specifically to college students. I feel like tackling homeless people too would be a very extensive proposal that may not appeal to lawmakers being that it would be too broad. I can tell that you did a lot of research and your solutions were very thought-out and well worded. My biggest question regarding your proposal is whether these telemedicine technologies will be implemented at just public universities throughout Michigan being that this is a state proposal.

Gun Violence

Devin McIntyre (TC)'s picture

Bejmain's proposal on Gun Violence provides a unique topic to the caucus and would provide an  interesting conversation at the state. The work shows some understanding of the background issue with the stats and conversations form the teachers, but I do not believe the consultations went deep enough into the issue. When looking at the final solution, it is unclear how the state will implenent new laws that contradict federal law - this may be a sticking point in the caucus.

Trash Incinerators

Dylan Boilen's picture

I think the proposal named "Trash Incinerators,The Air Quality Killers" by Desmond Lorenz should be should be in the platform as this bill can help lower the rate of childhood asthma. Desmond discusses the dangers of trash incinerators and the harmful chemicals released such as dioxin and carbon monoxide that deteriorate the air quality. This is a low risk proposal as there are alternatives to trash incinerators. Removing these trash incinerators will not only lower the rate of childhood asthma, but also improve the air quality for all citizens.
