Between Thursday, November 17 and the deadline of Tuesday, November 27 at noon, use this group to discuss the relative merits of proposals in terms of potential inclusion in the MSC Platform. In particular, discuss:

  • Which specific proposals are most worthy of being in the platform, and why? (Reference the rating criteria list below.)
  • In general, which issues should be the priority for students in Michigan, and which proposals best address those issues?
  • Unless you have a compelling reason to do otherwise, discuss one proposal in each posting, indicating the name of the particular proposal you are discussing in the title of your comment.

RATING CRITERIA

Please consider these criteria when rating proposals.

  • Is each part of the proposal completed in a high-quality way?
  • How well does the proposal demonstrate a solid understanding of the core issue and the “problem behind the problem”?
  • To what extent does the proposal contain high-quality supporting evidence and background information?
  • How relevant is the proposal to the needs of students of different ages and backgrounds in different parts of Michigan?
  • To what extent do the consultations add important information and non-obvious perspectives?
  • To what extent is there credible articulation of counter-arguments and challenges to potential adoption and implementation of the proposed solution?
  • To what extent does the proposed solution contain specificity and detail that shows how it could actually be implemented and paid for?
  • To what extent does the proposal demonstrate creativity and passion for the issue?

Proposal Feedback:...

Proposal Feedback: Childhood Obesity Grace and Morgan did a great job on their proposal. All of their hard work really showed throughout, and I really liked reading through their consultations because they did such a good job of relating back to the problem. Their solutions were very well thought out, and I think their formal proposal was clear and very plausible. They took a very relevant issue and made it into something that could begin to be solved by state legislation.

Proposal Feedback: Mental Health for Children

Lindsey Simon's picture

I really enjoyed reading Stefan and Troy's proposal on mental health education for children in the classroom. Not only is this matter extremely prevalent in our society, but it is also a rising issue across all ages, so clearly there is need for a reform. I think their idea to incorporate this education into the school system is a great one, as school is the one constant for all children.

Proposal Feedback: Air Pollution in Michigan

I absolutely was blown away and really enjoyed this proposal. This is a really important issue for everyone and it is ignored too often. The strong proposal started with an interesting and relevant persona. The three solutions are extremely thorough. All three solutions are obviously well thought out and all could be implemented in reality. I found these solutions especially interesting since they all supplement each other and could be established in tandem. They also are not too far fetched and are actually feasible. In my opinion, your consultations are the strong point of the proposal.

Proposal Feedback: Sexual Assault Reporting

I believe Josie's proposal targets a high impact issue for students and I urge other members of the caucus to take a look at her proposal. This proposal is the only one under the category of gender and social rights and I agree that more steps need to be taken to increase sexual assault reporting. Some notable elements of her proposal are the diverse and in depth consultations: Josie had the chance to speak with a SAPAC representative as well as a police detective. Her solution outlines increasing SVU's on campuses and increasing timeliness of response times to sexual assault cases.

I really enjoyed reading Stefan and Troy's proposal, I think they did a great job researching and backing up their claims. Mental health is one of those problems that, unfortunately, will likely never resolve completely. I applaud the two for tackling this topic head-on, coming up with very creative solutions as well as relevant research. The group came up with solutions that have the potentially to work very well.

Platform Wrap-up

Hello Everyone,

It is getting to crunch time as we begin to wrap up the Platform discussion at noon tomorrow. If you have any final points that you feel have not been heard regarding a well-done proposal (or anything of that matter), feel free to share it here. We look forward to seeing who gets to present in Lansing next month. Lastly, do not forget to rate everyone's specific proposal with the slider bars shown at the bottom of each. Keep up the good work!

Proposal Feedback: Child Poverty and Hunger

Scott Cohen's picture

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this proposal. All of Caroline’s points were valid and also well-supported with facts. I think that the issue of childhood hunger is one that we as a Country will continue to try to come up with solutions for over the coming years. This is not a problem that can be solved in a short period of time, but instead, takes steps to complete. That's why I believe Caroline’s proposal is a really good first step. Regarding her first solution, I think this is an amazing idea. School food waste has gone largely unnoticed throughout the years.

A Closer Look: Reviewing a Proposal

It's been great to see the ongoing dialogue surrounding the many proposals presented to the Caucus. One thing that I think could be particularly useful as our discussion prior to the finalizing of the platform concludes is including some specifics from each piece of work that you found to be most (in)effective.

Proposal Feedback: Child Poverty and Hunger

Carolines proposal on addressing child hunger associated with poverty is very relevant to society as it impacts our future generations. She did a great job of addressing the probelm, consulting with the necessary people to make her arguement more convincing, and coming up with proposed solutions to combat the issue.

Ashley and Ali,

Great work on the proposal. Your POV, Media Artifact, and your consultations all show a clear understanding on the issue and would be great to use in your proposal at the State. I think that your use of a consultation with someone out of state shows a great perspective on the issue and can highlight new potential solutions.
