Between Monday, April 1 and the deadline of Monday, April 8 at 11:59, use this group to discuss the relative merits of proposals in terms of potential inclusion in the MSC Platform. In particular, discuss:

  • Which specific proposals are most worthy of being in the platform, and why? (Reference the rating criteria list below.)
  • In general, which issues should be the priority for students in Michigan, and which proposals best address those issues?

Also:

  • Before posting, be sure to read any and all of the posts that have already been made by others. If others have posted about a proposal you'd like to discuss, join that discussion. If not, start a new thread.
  • Unless you have a compelling reason to do otherwise, discuss just one proposal in each posting, indicating the name of the proposal in the title of your comment.
  • Keep your comments focused on the IDEAS in the proposal, not the authors. Remember that everyone has worked hard on their proposal, and that every proposal has both strengths and weaknesses.

RATING CRITERIA

Please consider these criteria when rating proposals.

  • Is each part of the proposal completed in a high-quality way?
  • How well does the proposal demonstrate a solid understanding of the core issue and the “problem behind the problem”?
  • To what extent does the proposal contain high-quality supporting evidence and background information?
  • How relevant is the proposal to the needs of students of different ages and backgrounds in different parts of Michigan?
  • To what extent do the consultations add important information and non-obvious perspectives?
  • To what extent is there credible articulation of counter-arguments and challenges to potential adoption and implementation of the proposed solution?
  • To what extent does the proposed solution contain specificity and detail that shows how it could actually be implemented and paid for?
  • To what extent does the proposal demonstrate creativity and passion for the issue?

ADHD Misconception

ADHD Misconception

Hi everyone, I have really enjoyed following the progression of Jacks’s proposal: ADHD Misconception. I can personally resonate with this proposal as I was diagnosed with ADD when I was younger and my younger brother has ADHD as well.

Learning Disabilities Early...

Learning Disabilities Early Diagnosis and Support Issues I wanted to begin by thanking Matthew for bringing this proposal to the MSC platform! With learning disabilities being such a difficult issue to attack, I think this idea has much potential to win the attention at the hearing. The consultations are concrete, evidencing the volumes of effort and time you have devoted to this cause. One drawback I have is the unspecified amount of funding you present. I think this might be problematic during the hearing if you are chosen, and adding numbers would make your proposal stronger. Thanks again!

Michigan Curriculums: Playing Catch-Up (Dylan and Stevie)

Jordan Landsberg's picture

Hi everyone, I wanted to share the proposal Michigan Curriculums: Playing Catch-Up written by Dylan Dorfman and Stevie Weingard. This proposal should be shared and heard by the state at the hearing, as this proposal clearly outlines the problem and gives feasible solutions to an important issue Michigan is facing. Stevie and Dylan both seem to have a wealth of knowledge on this topic and seem to have spoken to many people.

Food Desert Proposal by Elizabeth and Bella

I wanted to share the Formal Proposal on Food Deserts in Detroit written by Elizabeth James and Bella Mattera. I believe that this proposal should definitely be presented in Lansing because of its specificity and correlation to a significant problem that Michigan faces. Bella and Elizabeth do a great job outlining a pilot program that the state could implement in Detroit schools that would address the problem of food deserts. I have seen a lot of proposals and provocations on this topic but believe this proposals idea on how to handle it is very unique.

Incarcerated Youth Literacy Project

Hi Hannah, I just want to thank you for attempting to tackle such an important issue that impacts many people on and around campus. Since my first comment on your post, I love to see your progress. You have done a great job specifically with your counter arguments and the wording of your Preambulatory clauses. I think because of this you would do a great job presenting at the hearing; especially if you can think of great responses to the counter-arguments. I also want to commend you on your consultations, for they make your proposal seem more relatable and important.

Lack of Educational Resources for Non-Native English Students

Garrett Wilson's picture

I think this proposal is very well done and addresses an important issue. When I came to Michigan, it really opened my eyes to how many international and domestic students not only speak different languages, but speak a different language as their native language. This language barrier is difficult and can set otherwise smart students on a very difficult path.

An act to establish affordable housing to support the creation of a walkable downtown

Jack Berkey's picture

Hi Casey and Jordan, I just wanted to applaud you guys on creating a great proposal. Affordable housing is an increasingly important problem across this nation and I believe that you have proposed a great potential solution to improve affordable housing within the state of Michigan. I have definitely enjoyed watching your proposal grow and change over the last couple weeks and especially your final. I think your last change to create a commission is the strongest idea you could have proposed as your are trying to tackle an extremely daunting problem.
