The Power of Standardized Tests

Shayne Tessler's picture

Recently, a superintendent was fired because his high school students were not performing well on standardized tests.

Do you think that this is a justified move? How important are standardized tests? Do you believe in their ability to determine/quantify intelligence?

Michigan Water Issues

Shayne Tessler's picture

This MLive article discusses how several Michigan water systems have recently failed tests for containing excessive amounts of lead. Awareness regarding the dangers related to lead-tainted water have increased since the Flint Water Crisis, angering several residents.

What steps should the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality take towards not only fixing this issue, but in regaining the trust of Michigan inhabitants? What kind of role does trust play when analyzing the relationship between government institutions and citizens?

Trump Declares National Emergency

Dylan Dorfman's picture

Three days ago I posted in the group "In the News" regarding the tentative agreement Congress concoted to appease the other side regarding the entire government shutdown. The republicans agreed to lower their asking # regarding the wall while the democrats gave up their fight in trying to limit the number of immigrants ICE can hold in captivation at once. While the government and constituents nationwide were hopeful that the government shutdown would be finally over and the country would settle down, Trump declared a national emergency at the Southern border earlier today.

Artificial Intelligence Executive Order

Bella Mattera's picture

President Trump has been adamant about taking strides to improve our country’s artificial intelligence. Yesterday he took the first step in achieving this by signing an executive order that calls for federal agencies to invest more in artificial intelligence. His plan includes five distinct areas: research and development, freeing resources, ethical standards, automation and international outreach.

Tentative Government Agreement

Dylan Dorfman's picture

In the last 24 hours, the government has temporarily and tentatively found a solution that will officially end the government shutdown and the chaos invoked on this country since December! While all are happy and relieved some middle ground was found between Republicans, Democrats, and President Trump, the result is $1.375 billion of tax payer money going to the funds for the Southern border wall...

Amazon has been scouting...

Bella Mattera's picture
Amazon has been scouting for a new city to host its headquarters. New York had been a really strong candidate for the new headquarters, but recently it began to face some backlash. This new headquarters would bring 25,000 jobs to New York City. Elected officials were so eager for the plan to occur that they offered huge subsidies to Amazon. Many people are disappointed that the government would provide subsidies to “the world’s most valuable company.” Protesters have been putting pressure on their elected officials to protest the deal.

Much controversy has arisen surrounding Gillette's recent ad inspired by the Me-Too Movement. While some think this ad is perfectly acceptable, others have created backlash in the idea that this advertisement is a promotion of gender inequality. How do others feel about this controversy? Parking Lot Suicides: How the VA has failed in Veteran's Mental Health

Elizabeth James's picture

I recently read an article on The Washington Post discussing the string of suicides in the last year that have happened on VA campus hospitals. In the past year, 19 veterans have committed suicide on VA property, seven of which have been in the parking lot. News reports are claiming that this is a final act of protest against the VA system that has failed so many veterans.
