I wanted to bring attention to something that has been seen in the news a lot recently. If you are not up to date with this story, Jussie Smollett is a star on the show Empire. Back in January, Smollet claimed that he had been attacked by two men that targeted him because he is both black and gay. He said that the men screamed "this is MAGA country", referencing Trump's campaign slogan, "Make America Great Again." However, soon after police started investigating the hate crime, it became clear that Smollett had actually paid the two brothers to attack him to gain publicity. Smollett was then indicted on 16 counts of felony disorderly conduct.
Just recently, all charges against Smollett were dropped after he forfeited his bail money and performed community service. This occurrence has enraged much of the nation, including Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Now Chicago is demanding $130,000 from Smollett to pay back what the investigation has cost the Chicago Police Department.
What do you think of this occurrence? How do you think cases like this should be handled? Any other thoughts?
