I was just reading a fairly interesting article that outlined the discrepancies between gender pay pertaining to sports. This article in particular was interesting for me due to my involvement with sports and soccer in particular. I remember in 2015 following the USWNT third world cup win a lot of the players spoke up publicly expressing their concern and frustration with the pay gap between themselves and their male counterparts. Hope Solo, the women's goalkeeper stated, "we are the best in the world, have three World Cup championships, four Olympic championships, and the men get paid more to just show up than we get paid to win major championships." This is extremely accurate and I am wondering about what message this portrays to society. Men's sports, aside from tennis tend to have more viewership, therefore bring in larger amounts of revenue, however with the national teams viewership is farily equivalent so I dont see why they would not be paid the same amount or even more than the men if they are consistently out performing them. I am curious what others think about this issue? There is clearly an issue and lack of equality, so what do you guys think we can do to take steps in order to alleviate this?
