In most recent weeks, Facebook has been under fire for abandoning their fact checking rules for political ads. Mark Zuckerberg said, "We don't fact-check political ads. We don't do this to help politicians, but because we think people should be able to see for themselves what politicians are saying. And if content is newsworthy, we also won't take it down even if it would otherwise conflict with many of our standards." With an increase in fake news and slander on social media, why would facebook not want to help people get factual information that is necessary in deciding where they stand on a political issue? I understnad that is is hard to know when something is true or not regarding political figures and policies, and fact checking these ads might be difficult- but is that a reason to not try? There are people in this world that believe everything they read without checking futher. In my opinion, I think facebook should fact check these ads, thus creating a reliable and easy way to receive political information. What are your thoughts? How can this influence the way people view politics, or even the facebook brand?
