Ensuring the Safety of Students

Upon reading the news today, I came across a horrific article explaining how a teacher taped a student's mouth shut, and to make it even more upsetting, the student has cerebral palsy. According to the article, the innocent student also endured other forms of abuse, such as being locked in a bathroom, getting hot coffee spilled on her, as well as other instances. The teacher simply explained that the student was being "noisy."

“These weren’t accidents, and there was abuse going on,” Jonathan Marko, the family’s attorney, said. “They blamed Rosa for scalding hot coffee being poured on her. They blamed Rosa for coming home with bruises on her. They even blamed Rosa for being too loud, and that’s why they had to gag and bound her.”

Along with this event, many other forms of abuse have been performed on innocent children throughout the years, including sexual assault. With this in mind, how can we ensure that the children of America are safe in a classroom? If we cannot trust a teacher, then who can we trust? In my high school, a teacher was actually sent to jail for persuading a student to have sexual relations with her. This is incredibly inappropriate, and I think it is in the Caucus' best interest to talk how we can improve the life of students in Michigan.
