Eliminate The Pink Tax!

  1. What is a current bill or law that relates in some way to your proposal? Use the legislative database found here

A house bill, No 123. It's about removing the sales tax from feminine hygiene products. It also shows a list of things that aren't charged sales tax. The proposition is adding feminine hygiene products to that list

  1. How would this bill make a difference in the lives of students across Michigan?

Almost all girls use tampons, pads razors, and If women make about 79 cents for every dollar men make, It’s hardly fair that women don’t get paid as much!

  1. How and where did you learn about the issues underlying your proposal?

I already knew about this issue but I didn’t know how bad It was. I used pictures and websites to research and show other people how bad the pink tax really is.

  1. Link to your media artifact(s) giving background on the issue:

Podcast On The Pink Tax

  1. To whom did you talk about this issue to learn more?

I didn’t talk specifically to anyone for this project

  1. What did you initially think about your topic and how did your thinking change over time?

I thought that the pink tax was really frustrating. It is better that they are making some laws about it.

  1. What was the most significant article/video/report/website that you used and how did it impact your research?

Juliana did some of our research too but this is something I found.

Listen Money Matters - Pink Tax It had a lot of good info and topics. It also had good graphs and pictures

Part 2: FORMAL PROPOSAL due Oct 29

The sections below should comprise your final proposal language, submitted for consideration by your peers and potential inclusion in the MSC Platform.

Preambulatory clauses

These set up the PROBLEM, but not the solution.

WHEREAS… Women have to pay 13% more than men for personal care products and 7% more for girls toys and accessories.

WHEREAS… Tampons and pads are considered “luxury items” and are charged sales tax in Michigan.

WHEREAS… White Women make about 79 cents, African American women make about 69 cents, and Hispanic women make about 64 cents for every dollar men make. This is problematic because women have to pay more for basic products when they get paid less for their jobs!

(Add more "Whereas" clauses if necessary.)

Operative clauses

These describe in detail, the solution you are proposing (not the problem itself; those should go in the "Whereas" clauses above).

My proposition is to remove the sales tax from tampons and pads

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED...

  1. Remove the sales tax from pads and tampons because they are not luxury items, they are a necessity. Senate bill no. 123 suggests that the sales tax be removed, but it hasn't been resolved yet.

  1. Employers need to pay equal wages to females and males.

(Add more "Resolved" clauses if necessary.)

Counter-arguments:

What are three reasonable arguments against this proposal?

  1. Food and water are necessities, tampons are not.

  2. What if the women aren't working as hard as their male counterparts?

  3. It would be too expensive to remove the sales tax.

Costs and funding:
  1. What are some costs associated with your proposal?

The tax will have to be removed from tampons and pads, which will cost some money.

  1. How will you pay for your proposed bill? From what sources could the funding come?

Taxes, donations, etc.

  1. Who (people or groups) might object to funding your proposal?

Many men don’t understand how necessary tampons and pads are, especially older men because periods were way more secret and hidden than they are now. Also, boys weren't educated about periods in school
