Ann Arbor did not renew its contract with electric scooter company Bird this summer. Instead, University of Michigan has made an agreement with Spin Inc. that allows for the University to regulate the number of scooters and scooter usage in the area. The city of Ann Arbor had multiple disputes with Bird in relation to automobile and pedestrian traffic concerns. Bird did not comply with the city demands and ultimately saw dozens of scooters become confiscated. Therefore, Ann Arbor and Bird parted ways.
Is it bad that the city now only allows Spins to be deployed in and around campus? Is it bad that there is no competition between electric scooter companies in Ann Arbor? Do you think that Ford owning Spin affects the decision made by the city?
