Domestic Violence and Pets

Recently I started volunteering at an animal shelter nearby. One of their most important outreach programs is helping women who are suffering from domestic violence who can't or refuse to leave their pets. Many shelters are now implementing programs where they take in dogs for periods of times for women to escape a dangerous environment. This article discusses that not only animal shelters are helping this issue, but shelters for women suffering domestic violence are now allowing pets as well. I think this issue is really underrated and many people don't think about the effects a pet can have on a persons decision to leave a violent environment. This article discusses the importance of governments implementing programs to help women and their animals escape domestic violence.
