Article VIII of the...

Article VIII of the constitution of the State of Michigan grants public universities a large degree of autonomy in their internal governance: some believe that needs to change. As a University of North Michigan victim of sexual assault and author of this article notes, “Michigan colleges have a crisis on campuses and it is not just the number of sexual assaults. The crisis includes how universities are silencing students and that complaints against universities too often go unaddressed.” The author proposes mandating oversight of universities through an independent ombudsman’s office at the state level which would adjudicate complaints against the universities 15 public universities. If the allegation raised in this article can be independently confirmed (anyone interested in investigating?), including a potential amendment to the state constitution: 2/3 approval in both houses--not a small challenge. What do you think, Caucus members? Is this something worth pursuing?
